Re-reading Leviticus 10:1-6: What was the sin of Nadab and Abihu?

본 연구는 레위기 10장에 나오는 나답과 아비후의 죽음을 레8-10장의 내러티브 안에서 재해석하였다. 레위기 8-9장에서 중보자는 하나님과 제사장, 하나님과 백성을 연결하는 통로의 역할을 했는데, 이 때 그들에게 요구된 것은 ‘여호와의 명하신 대로’ 그 일을 수행하는 것이다. 본문은 중보자의 각 행위가 “여호와께서 명하심과 같았”다고 반복함으로써 이 사실을 강조하였다. (8:9, 13, 17, 21, 29, 36; 9:6, 10, 21) 하지만 그 과정에서 유일하게 “여호와의 명하시지 않은” 일을 한 사람들이 있는데, 그들이 바로 나답과 아비후다. 그들의 심판은 여호와의 명령에 대한 불순종의 결과였으며, 이로서 그들은 중보자로서의 자격을 상실하게 되었다. 그리하여 하나님은 즉각적 심판을 통해 그들이 제 팔 일의 제사 중 두 번째 국면, 즉 백성을 위한 제사에 참여하는 것을 막으셨다.

This study reinterprets the deaths of Nadab and Abihu in Leviticus 10 within the context of the narrative of Leviticus 8-10. In Leviticus 8-9, the mediators serve as a connection between God and the priests and between God and the people. The requirement of the mediators is that they perform their work “as the LORD has commanded.” The text emphasizes it by repeatedly stating that each of the mediators’ actions was “as the LORD had commanded.” (8:9, 13, 17, 21, 29, 36; 9:6, 10, 21) However, there are two people who did something that “he had not commanded them”: Nadab and Abihu. Their judgment was the result of their disobedience to LORD's command, which disqualified them as mediators. Thus, through immediate judgment, God prevented them from participating in the second phase of the eighth-day sacrifice, the sacrifice for the people.
