학생들의 지식 구성과 인식론에 중요한 역할을 하고 있는 비판적 사고는 근래에 교사와 학생들의 권력의 공유를 강조하는 Freire 의 문제제기형 교육방법을 통해 학생들에게 적용되고 있다. 우리 사회에서는 공교육에서의 문제제기형 교육방침이나 비판적 사고에 대한 중요성은 이미 인식되어지고 있지만 효율적인 실현을 위한 방법론적인 대안제시는 기존의 교육방침 및 형태로는미흡한것이 현실이다. 저자는학생들의 바판적 사고 방법을 발전시키는 능동적 주관자로서의 교사들의 ‘pluralism'과 ‘qualified truth' 의 이해를 강조함과 동시에, Peirce 의 어떤 명제도 의심할 여지가 없는 것은 없다는 이 론인 theory of fallibilism를 통한 비 판적 사고방식 재해석의 노력을 강조한다. 이글에서 강조하는 열린 비판적 사고는 교사와 학생이 공유해야 할 비판적 사고 이론으로 이성만이 개입되는 절대적인 진리를 통한 교육방침을 지양하고 감성, 직감, 상상력, 경험 등을 통한 진리의 상대성과 다양성을 강조하여 학생 개개인의 능동적 사고능력을 배양, 이성과 감성의 균형적 발전을 지향하는데 주목하고 있다. 특히, 이글에서는 열린 비판적사고의 구현을 위한 방법론적 접근으로서의 거시적인 교육성과의 성취를 강조한다.
As critical thinking plays an important role in constructing knowledge for students and is interrelated with epistemology, it is often practiced in the classroom through Freire's problem-posing method of education. This method of instruction is considered democratic due to teachers and students being able to share the power. However, in encouraging students to develop their critical thinking skills, teachers should begin to take a different stance by accepting 'pluralism' and 'qualified truth' instead of 'absolute truth'. If teachers expect certain discussions from students after posing a problem, and create an environment to induce the absolute truth of which the teachers think is right, the situation will limit students to fully and freely engage in critical thinking. Through embracing Peirce's theory of fallibilism, teachers should reinterpret the definition of critical thinking. According to Thayer-Bacon, transforming critical thinking or constructive thinking is a feminist redescription of critical thinlking to include emotions, intuition, and imagination as tools we use to help us thin!, constructively, as well as reason, the historically favored tool in Euro-western philosophy. In this paper, the researcher introduces the theory of 'Open Critical Thinking' and suggests that teachers should be more receptive to students' various perspectives by acknowledging 'pluralism' and 'qualified truth' which will also eventually help teachers to avoid misusing the power in the classroom.
