본 연구는 미술과 창의성이 어떻게 관련되어 있는지를 미술의 인지심리학적 기초를 제공하는 시각적 사고를 중심으로 고찰해 보았다. 오래전부터 미술은 창의성과 밀접하게 관련되어 있는 것으로 알려졌다. 그 관련성의 근거로 미술활동의 창조적이고 자유로운 개방적 특성이 언급되었다. 그러나 이와 같은 미술활동 자체가 창의성을 향상 시키는 조건 이외에 미술의 어떤 인지적 과정이 창의성을 증진시키는지를 이해하는 것은 이론적 측면에서는 물론 실용적인 측면에서도 매우 중요한 의의가 있다. 그래서 시각적 사고의 개념에 기초하여 미술의 어떤 인지적 특성이 창의성을 증진시키는지를 분석하였다. 우선 시각적 사고는 시각적 이미지를 매개로 정보를 처리함으로써 개념에 의한 논리적 사고에서 나타나는 순차적 처리에 의해 유발되는 알고리즘의 기계적인 사용을 억제함으로써 사고의 유연성을 층가시킨다. 또한 시각적 사고는 동시적이고 전체적으로 정보를 처리하는 인지적 과정에 의해 전체 장면에서 작용하는 요소들 간의 역동적인 관계성을 파악하여 서로 관련이 없는 것으로 알려졌던 기존의 사실들 간에 유용한 관계나 유사성의 발견을 가능하게 한다. 시각적으로 사고하는 인식의 한 방식으로서 미술은 마음속에 참재하는 자발적인 창조적 요구를 자극하고, 사물을 탐구하고 발견하는 창의적 인식능력의 발달에 중요한 역할을 할 수 있을 것이다.
This study is aimed at theoretically examining the relationship of creativity to art on the basis of the concepts of visual thinl<ing providing the cognitive psychological foundation of art. Art and creativity has an intimate relation. The creative, unrestricted, and open characteristics of an artistic activity have been pointed out as some of the primary reasons. However, apart from the conditions where an artistic activity itself enhances creativity on the basis of such characteristics, understanding which cognitive process of art improves creativity has a crucial implication in the theoretical and practical aspects. Consequently, to analyze which characteristic of art affects the enhancement of creativity on the basis of the concepts of visual thinking was worth attention. First of all, visual thinking is a concept in contrast to logical thinking based on abstract concepts, and it helps process information in a simultaneous, wholesome manner so that the mechanical use of an algorithm deriving from logical thinking can be avoided, improving the flexibility of thinking and ensuring that the existing problems may be viewed from whole new perspectives. And visual thinking has been supported by the recent neuro-scientific research, according to which the left and right hemispheres of the brain are in charge of different cognitive functions respectively. The right hemisphere of the brain plays a role in processing the overall structural features associated with the spatial relationship similar to visual thinking. And then an artistic activity based on visual thinking functions as a cognitive means of creative thinking, through much a desire for voluntary creation inherent in the mind is stimulated so that it can play an important role in the development of creative capabilities of cognition that can help inquire into matters and draw out general principles.
