한국 학생들의 학습능력을 높이기 위한 한 방법으로 학교공동체를 형성하려는 노력이 나오고 있지만, 공동체의 효과성을 높이기 위해서는 학생이 중심이 되는 학급공동체에 대한 연구가 필요하다. 이에 본 연구는 학급공동체의 필요성과 성공적인 학급공동체의 특징을 파악하고자 하였다. 학급공동체의 필요성을 파악하기 위해서는 학교공동체에 관한 문헌연구를 수행하였으며, 학급공동체의 특징을 파악하기 위해서는 성공적인 공동체로 널리 알려진 일본의 1 개 초등학교와 미국의 4개 초등학교를 방문하여 관찰하였다. 학급공동체의 필요성은 배움에 대한 욕구, 돌봄에 대한 욕구, 표현의 욕구와 같은 인간의 기본직인 욕구로부터 도출되었다. 성공적인 학급공동체의 특징은 협력학습의 활성화, 수업개방, 지식 생비자의 역할 강조, 사회ㆍ정서적 학습 강조이다. 학급공동체의 필요성과 특징은 학급공동체를 형성하는데 필요한 기초자료로 사용-될 수 있을 것이다.
Educators and schools of Korea have made various attempts to build school communities for improving students' learning for a long time. However, studies on the student-centered classroom communities are scare and it is necessary to conduct research on classroom communities in the context of student-centered learning. The purposes of this paper are to verify the necessities of classroom communities in an elementary school and to investigate the characteristics of successful classroom communities. In order to accomplish these purposes, we reviewed the related literatures and observed the activities of five elementary schools (one Japanese school and four USA schools). The necessities of classroom communities were driven from the basic human needs such as the need for learning, the need for care, and the need for self- expression. The characteristics of successful classroom communities were the enhancement of collaborative learning, opened classroom, the role of knowledge prosumer, and the emphasis on social and emotional learning. Theses findings will be used as a theoretical basis in building successful student-centered classroom communities at schools.
