기초학력미달 예방은 교육의 당면과제이다. 초등 6%, 중등 20% 선에서 학력 향상학교의 지정 등 다각적 노력이 집중되고 있다. 기초학력미달은 학교학습의 필수도구인 문자의 사용미숙에도 원인이 있어 보인다. 이 논문은 다운증후군과 지적장애를 함께 갖는 아동들에게 단기기억 맞춤 프로그램을 적용한 결과, 낱글자 숙달 등으로 책읽기가 능숙해지고 혼자 생각하기가 시작되는 과정을 밝히는데 목적이 있다. 그 방법으로는 이들의 정보처리가 3바이트 이하라는 사실에 착안 (Ellis,1970), 좌뇌 맞춤의 1-2바이트학습을 위해 1,376쪽 8권의 교재 등을 제작, 사용하였고, 낱글자 습득을 철저히 저해하는 통문자 중심 상징적 단계로 문자학습을 시작하지 않고, 낱글자 중심 알파벳단계부터 음절화 자음카드로 시작하였으며, 마임 등의 의미적 정교화, 리듬의 청킹 등조직화를 거쳐, 맥락 형성의 문자단계에서 통독, 다독을 수행하였다. 그 결과 이들의 학습이 정상아 학습으로 접근되는 로드맵이 드러나게 되었다. 끝으로 피험자 중 유치원 1명, 1학년 1명의 취학전 또는 취학초기 정상아 접근적 변화로서, 이들의 교실학습적응모습은 2006.5.1. 개설 이후 대규모 읽기연구 실험실로 운영되고 있으며, 이 논문의 바탕이 된 인터넷 카페, '자음카드한글학습'이 지속적으로 생산하고 있는 다량의 데이터와 함께 기초학력미달이라는 거국적 교육난제에 대한 조기예방과 처치 가능성을 실증적으로 보여주었다.
Children with D.S./I.D. are not proficient in reading. The purpose of this research is to investigate the effects of Ellis & short term memory-based reading program for children with D.S./I.D.. According to Ellis(1970), children with D.S./I.D. are disrupted when they read Korean words, sentences, or tale books, if reading task is beyond their short term memory (1,2,3). So in this research we adapted Kim's program (2004) considering their short term memory to four children with D.S./I.D.. Research were done at home and at school. by their mothers. Researchers took videotapes and photos to get reading changes of subjects and each mother reported the results of her teaching on the web site. After 23-41 months subjects succeeded in mastering 1,450 syllables and came to read through 30-180 of tale books. And subjects who mastered reading before entering school or during the 1st semester of the 1st grade began to think that they could do anything at school and that they were the same as other classmates because they also could read tale books and textbooks fluently. Conclusively, When teaching to read to the children with D.S./I.D. , the start level of the ability to read 19 Korean syllables '가 나 다...하 까...빠' or 'ㄱ ㄴ ㄷ...ㅎ ㄲ...ㅃ‘ is important, and first of all considering the short term memory of each of them is very important. And mastered early before entering school, children with D.S./I.D also began to think that they were the same as normal children.
