본 연구는 상상력의 개념을 역사적으로 규명하고, 키렌 이건의 상상력 이론과 교수·학습 활동을 분석하였다. 상상력 개념의 역사는 플라톤과 아리스토텔레스로 대별되며, 근대의 흄과 칸트로 이어진다. 칸트의 ‘창조적 상상력’은 현대의 바슐라르에게 영향을 미치고, 상상력과 이성적 능력의 결합에서 바슐라르와 의견을 같이 하는 이건은 상상력과 교육의 문제를 집중적으로 조명하였다. 이건은 사회화, 학문적 이데아, 발달이론이 불완전하게 공존하는 기존의 교육을 비판하고, 대안으로 ‘마음의 이해’와 ‘인지도구’ 이론을 제안하였다. 그는 인류의 주요한 정신적인 도구를 바탕으로 인간의 마음이 ‘신체적, 신화적, 낭만적, 철학적, 반어적 이해’의 단계로 발달하며, 각각의 이해 단계에 적합한 인지도구를 제안하고, 인지도구를 최대한 활용하는 교수·학습 활동을 예시하였다. 이러한 교수·학습활동을 통한 지식에 대한 깊은 이해는 학습자의 상상력 신장에 기여할 것으로 보았다.
The purpose of this study was to explore the philosophical concept of imagination focusing on Plato, Aristotle, Hume, Kant and Bachelard, and Kieran Egan’s Imaginative Education. In Plato’s work and Aristotle’s, the imagination is a faculty that copies what is in the world. According to Kant, followed to Hume’s work, the imagination is a powerful agent for creating as it were a second nature out of the material supplied to it by actual nature. Bachelard’ concept of imagination was affected by Kant’s, and Kieran Egan concurred with Bachelard’s view in the fusion of the imagination and reason. Egan is an educational philosopher whose emphasis on imagination. He offers us a new theory that describes education in terms of a sequence of kinds of understanding. He characterizes several distinctive ways of understanding as the Somatic, Mythic, Romantic, Philosophic and Ironic ways of knowing. Learning in Depth program (LiD) is designed as an additional contribution schools can make to students' education. LiD is both easy to implement and does not cost much to do so, and yet it delivers a very considerable educational benefit to students, especially for developing students' imagination. Egan’s main idea, that education does reside in mastery of cognitive tools and acquiring knowledge because all knowledge is human knowledge, gives our education a special meaning.
