조화로운 교육으로서 허친스의 교양교육의 내용과 방법에 대한 고찰

A Study on the Contents and Methods of Hutchins' Liberal Arts Education as a Harmonious Education

연구목적: 본 논문은 융합과 창의역량이 요구되는 사회변화 속에서 대학의 전공 중심 교육의 한계를 극복하고 교육적 시사를 얻고자 허친스 교양교육의 내용과 방법을 탐구하는 데 목적을 두었다. 연구방법: 이를 위해 먼저, 허친스의 교양교육의 탄생 배경으로서 교육의 목적을 분석하고, 다음으로 허친스가 생각하는 교양교육과 전문교육의 관계를 기반으로 교양교육의 내용이 어떻게 구성되었는지 살펴보았다. 끝으로, 구체적인 교육방법으로서 위대한 대화를 분석하여 시사점을 도출하였다. 연구결과: 총체적이고 맥락적인 안목을 기르는 교양교육은 학생들의 전공교육 심화에도 기여할 수 있다는 것, 그리고 허친스의 교양교육 사상은 교양교육과 전공교육이 상호작용하면서 조화롭게 발전할 수 있는 가능성을 제공하고 있다는 것을 확인하였다. 논의 및 결론: 허친스의 교양교육의 내용과 방법은 교수-학생 간 수평적 관계에서 일어나는 자유로운 지적 탐구 및 대화를 통해 개인과 사회의 성장·발전을 도모하는 근본 원리와 철학을 보여준다. 오늘날의 대학에서는 이러한 원리에 따른 지적 대화가 일어날 수 있도록 대학 문화를 조성하는 노력이 필요하다.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper was to explore the contents and methods of Hutchins’ liberal arts education in order to overcome the limitations of major-centered education in universities and gain educational implications in the midst of social changes that require convergence and creativity. Method: To do so, we first analyzed the purpose of education as a background for Hutchins' liberal arts education, then examined how the contents of liberal arts education were organized based on the relationship between liberal arts education and professional education as conceived by Hutchins. Finally, we analyzed the Great Conversation as a specific pedagogical method and draw implications. Results: A liberal arts education that contributes to the development of a holistic and contextualized outlook will also contribute to the deepening of students' major education. Hutchins' idea of a liberal arts education offered the possibility that the liberal arts and major education in university can interact and develop in harmony. Conclusion: The contents and methods of Hutchins’s liberal arts education revealed the fundamental principles and philosophy that promote the growth and development of individuals and society through free intellectual inquiry and dialogue in a horizontal relationship between professor and student. We should strive to create a university culture that fosters intellectual dialogue like Hutchins' liberal arts education.
