Promoting Deep Approaches to Learning : Instructional Implications

The paper addresses tl1e weakness inherent in sets of guidelines, for classroom application of basic processes of education: namely, lack of an integrating, compreheinsive model of learning. An adaptation of Biggs'(e.g., 1991a; 1991b) comprehensive 3P Model of Learning is described, one framework that accounts for relationships between teaching methodologies and differing kinds or types of learning advanced by various instructional approaches. Bases upon the model, the nature of students' approaches to learning that should be encouraged in school contexts, the advantages of fostering students' development into individuals who consciously utilize metacognition in their approach to learning, and methodologies which should foster ~ learning are presented.
