The Millennium: A Time for Looking Forward and Looking Back

The Millennium: A Time for Looking Forward and Looking Back

This article is the author's attempt to summarize some of the more important things that have happened with regard to creativity in the present century and to forecast what will happen in the twenty-first century. The author believes that knowledge about creative thinking, training, and testing has been vastly expanded in the 1900s. There are many books on its nature. Many methods of training and teaching have been devised, discussed, and validated. Several educational programs, such as the Future Problem Solving Program and Odyssey of the Mind, have been established. Numerous tests have been developed and marketed for assessing creative thinking abilities. The spread of information about developments regarding creativity has been slow, but as we approach the twenty-first century, the spread is becoming almost worldwide. Yet, even in the United States of America, there are still vast numbers of even well educated people who are unaware of these developments or their value. The author predicts that there will be a great spread of multi-cultural influences in the next century and gives some examples of these influences. It is also predicted that increasing longevity and the accompanying rapidity of social and technological change will necessitate greater emphasis on creative development throughout the life stages.
