The purpose of the study was to investigate what factors impact on successful problem solving performance by reviewing the literatures of problem solving research. The article addressed influential factors affecting problem solving in terms of internal factors, which relate to cognitive and affective variables as well as external factors, which have been generally considered as environmental variables that are directly related to the individual problem solver. Especially, problem characteristics, which have been neglected unintentionally, were highlighted as one of important external factors in problem-solving performance.
