이 연구의 목적은 대학과 단위학교 간의 협력 관계를 구축하여 교육연구자와 교육담당자 간의 진정한 협력과 참여를 통해 단위학교 수준에서 이루어지는 학교 개선 노력을 효과적으로 수행하는데 있다. 이룰 위한 방법적 토대로서 참여적 실천연구(participatory action research) 패러다임과 함께 학교 변화에 관련된 각종 이론, 그리고 앞으로 계속해서 발전시켜야 할 대학-단위학교 협력 모형을 소개하였다. 대학과 단위학교의 협력 관계 형성의 초기 단계에서 교육연구자와 교사 간의 신뢰형성의 중요성이 부각되었으며 단위학교 개선을 위해 가장 우선적으로 시행되어야 할 과제의 확인과 함께 실행 가능한 정도의 과제 수행이 강조되었다. 타 대학이나 사교육 시장과 경쟁체제하에 있는 대학과 단위학교 주체가 서로의 이익을 어떻게 조정하는가 하는 문제가 긴장된 상태로 유지되는 제한점도 지적되었다.
This study provided a framework for school improvement of university-school partnership resulting in authentic participation and collaboration among educators and researchers in education. Participatory action research was described as a research paradigm, and a couple of theoretical perspectives on school change, innovation, implementing change, and resistance of change. The analysis of the case of school improvement efforts by restructuring school facilities and implementing differentiating instruction showed that importance of trust building among educators and researchers was emerged in the beginning of the partnership. Furthermore, identification of major components necessary for school improvement and priorities among them were also regarded succeeding elements of the partnership. However, the partnership was restricted with a competing system in education, such as the university in the partnership competing with other universities and the school with private institutions.
