박물관 도슨트의 재개념화를 위한 역사적 고찰

Reconceptualizing Museum Docents Based on Historical Considerations

본 논문은 박물관 도슨트의 역사적 고찰을 통해 도슨트의 재개념화를 위한 요소를 도출하고, 이의 한국 박물관 도슨트 개념에 갖는 시사점을 논의하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 먼저 미국 박물관 도슨트의 역사를 태동기, 성장기, 발전기, 확장기의 네 시기로 구분하여 고찰하였다. 도슨트의 역할이 시작된 태동기에 대한 탐구를 시작으로, 도슨트 서비스 확장 및 관련된 전문인력 문제로 자원봉사 도슨트에 의지하였던 성장기에 대해 논의하였다. 발전기에서는 도슨트가 박물관 전문가로서 인정받기 어려웠으나 지역사회 소통전문가로서 중요한 위치를 차지하게 되고, 확장기에서는 디지털 기반으로 한 사이버 도슨트를 활용하는 변화의 과정을 서술하였다. 이러한 박물관 도슨트 역사에 대한 고찰을 토대로 도슨트의 재개념화를 위해 ‘도슨트의 다양한 역할 정의’, ‘도슨트 전문직업화’, ‘사회참여으로서의 도슨트 활동’이라는 3가지 요소를 도출하였다. 또한 사이버 도슨트와 관련하여 도슨트의 다양한 역할 정의에 관해 살펴보았는데 이를 통해 앞으로 한국 박물관 도슨트가 어떻게 변화할지 논의하였다. 본 논문은 향후 한국에서 박물관 종사자가 도슨트에 대해 심층적으로 이해할 수 있는 기초 자료로서 의의가 있다.

This paper aims to derive elements for the reconceptualization of museum docents through a historical review and to discuss its implications on the concept of museum docents in Korea. To this end, the history of museum docents in the United States was examined and divided into four phases: inception, growth, development, and expansion. Starting with a study of the inception phase where the role of docents began, we discussed the growth phase, during which dependence on volunteer docents arose due to the expansion of docent services and related professional workforce issues. In the development phase, while it was challenging for docents to be recognized as museum professionals, they nevertheless assumed an important role as communication specialists within their communities. The expansion phase was marked by the advent of digital-based cyber docents. Drawing on this review of the history of museum docents, we identified three elements for reconceptualizing docents: ‘defining various roles of docents’, ‘professionalization of docents’, and ‘docent activities as social participation’. We also examined the definition of various roles of docents in relation to cyber docents and discussed how docents in Korean museums might evolve in the future. This paper is significant as a foundational resource enabling deeper understanding of docents among museum professionals in Korea.
