Factors Influencing Nursing Students' Selection of the Major, Satisfaction with the Major, and Work Values

Purpose: The study aimed to investigate the motivations behind nursing students' major selection and their satisfaction with it, and identify the factors influencing their work values. Methods: The descriptive correlational study included 132 nursing students from four universities in one metropolitan city who agreed to participate. Results: The students’ major selection motivation, satisfaction with their major, and work values were rated at 3.14±0.73, 4.00±0.61, and 4.16±0.60, respectively, on a 5-point scale. The model accounted for 34.0% of the variance in occupational values (F=23.02, p <0.001). Major satisfaction demonstrated the highest influence on occupational values (β=.49, p<0.001). Regarding post-graduation employment location, occupational values were significantly lower for students who desired employment in general hospitals (β=−.19, p =0.012) or other institutions (β=−0.16, p =0.030) compared to those aspiring to work in tertiary hospitals. In contrast, the motivation students' major selection was not significantly correlate with their work values (r=0.09, p =0.294). Conclusion: The motivation for selection of the major is not affected by post-admission experiences. However, satisfaction with the selected major can change during the course of study. To enhance the work value of nurses after graduating from a nursing college, efforts are needed to improve the satisfaction with the selected major during their university education.
