Exploring the Implications of Seymour Papert’s Constructionism for Early Childhood Education

본 연구는 학습은 체험적 학습과정이 포함되어야 하며 직접 경험을 촉진함으로써 의미 있는 생산물이나 결과물로 산출할 때 가장 효과적인 교육이 이루어 질 수 있다는 시모어 패퍼트(Seymour Papert)의 도구적 구성주의 철학을 이론적으로 고찰해보고자 한다. 패퍼트의 도구적 구성주의 이론은 학습이 어떻게 이루어지는가에 대한 핵심을 구체화된 결과물에 기반을 둔 경험에 두고 있다. 패퍼트의 구성주의 이론은 기존의 구성주의 이론과 마찬가지로 학습자들이 경험을 통하여 지식을 구축하는 과정에서 능동적인 역할을 중요시 하는 ‘유아 중심의 관점’을 공유한다. 더 나아가 유아들을 정보의 단순한 수신자로 보지 않고, 서로를 위한 그리고 사회를 위한 중요 가치를 창조하고 그 가치를 나누는 유아들의 능력을 높이 평가한다는 점에서 패퍼트의 구성주의 이론은 유아의 주도적이고 자발적인 놀이를 권장하는 유아·놀이 중심 교육과정에 주는 함의가 크다. 메이커교육, 디지털미디어교육 등의 첨단매체를 활용한 교육에 관심을 가지고 있는 포스트 디지털 시대에서 기계를 활용한 학습의 선구자라 할 수 있는 패퍼트의 이론을 재조명하는 것은 어린이 및 교사에게 새로운 사고 양식과 탐구 도구를 제공하며 더 나아가서는 유아교육에서 첨단매체를 활용한 메이커교육에 대한 학습심리학적인 토대를 제공한다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

This study aimed to theoretically examine Seymour Papert’s constructionist philosophy proposed in the mid-1980s, which asserts that learning should involve experiential learning processes and that the most effective education occurs when meaningful products or outcomes are produced by promoting direct experiences. Papert’s constructionist theory is based on the notion that learning is grounded in tangible outcomes. Similar to the existing constructionist theories, Papert’s theory emphasizes the active role of learners in constructing knowledge through experiences, thereby highlighting a “child-centered perspective.” Furthermore, his constructionist theory values children as active participants in creating and sharing important values for themselves and society rather than mere passive recipients of information. In this regard, Papert’s theory has significant implications for early childhood education as it encourages child-centered education focused on play, which enhances children’s abilities to create and share values for themselves and society. At present, there is a growing interest in education utilizing cutting-edge media, such as maker education and digital media education. Revisiting Papert’s theory, which is considered a pioneer in machine-assisted learning in the post-digital era, provides new ways of thinking and research tools for children and teachers. Moreover, it offers a psychological foundation for learning in early childhood education that incorporates maker education through advanced media.
