무슬림여성유학생의 결혼관과 문화정체성 변화에 대한 내러티브 탐구

A Narrative Inquiry into the Perspectives on Marriage and the Modification of the Cultural Identity of a Female International Student from Muslim Culture

본 연구는 내러티브 접근법을 기반으로 연구참여자의 심층면담을 통해 경험된 이야기를 재구성해 가는 순환과정을 거쳤다. 연구참여자는 이집트에서 온 보수적 이슬람 배경의 여성 유학생으로, 이집트에서 대학교를 졸업한 후 국가장학생으로 한국 유학을 시작하게 되었다. 자료 분석을 통해 의미화된 개념인 ‘유학, 여행, 결혼’의 상관성을 중심으로 내러티브 탐구의 3차원적 공간인 시간성(과거-현재-미래), 장소성(환경 및 공간), 사회성(관계)의 관점에서 연구 문제를 논의하고, 연구참여자의 면담 과정에서 나타난 다중적인 문화정체성과 결혼관의 변화가 갖는 의미를 고찰해 보았다. 연구참여자는 무슬림 사회인 이집트에서 남성과 여성의 역할과 관련하여 결혼문화의 문제를 인식하게 되었다. 자율적으로 여행을 가지 못하는 여성, 가정에서 남성과 여성의 역할 분담을 요구하는 이집트 사회와 대비되는 한국사회를 마주하였다. 연구참여자의 결혼관의 변화 과정에서 유학이라는 물리적 이동이 중요한 요소로 작용하고 있으며, 유학이 연구참여자에게 여행이자 존속된 문화 집단으로부터의 해방을 의미한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 연구참여자가 한국 생활에 적응하며 다중적 문화정체성이 발현되었고, 다양한 가치관을 가진 개인 혹은 집단을 경험하는 과정에서 결혼관의 변화에 연관성을 가진다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구는 무슬림 여성 유학생을 대상으로 한 내러티브 탐구로, 아직 미미한 무슬림 여성 유학생과 관련된 기초적인 연구가 될 것이며, 이슬람의 결혼문화를 이해하는 데에 도움을 줄 것이다.

This study is a narrative inquiry into the cultural identity of a female Muslim studying in Korea and her changing views on marriage. The study aims to investigate how the research participant is adjusting to her new life in Korea and the internal/external impact her religion has had on the course. After conducting in-depth interviews with the participant, her experiences were reconstructed through a circular process for the study. The conservative Mslim participant arrived in Korea on a scholarship from the Korean government after earning her bachelor’s degree in Egypt, her home country. The correlation among studying abroad, traveling, and marriage-which concepts were defined by data analysis-was explored from the perspective of the three-dimensional space of narrative inquiry around time (past, present, and future), location (environment and space), and sociality (relationship). The participant’s multicultural identity and altered perspective on marriage were revealed throughout the interviews. The research findings indicate that studying in a foreign country or a different culture can play a significant role in changing one's perspective on marriage. Female Muslim students, studying abroad can be a valuable journey that provides a sense of freedom from their Muslim cultural group.
