어머니의 한국어 능력이 다문화 청소년의 자아존중감을 매개로 학업성취에 미치는 영향

The Effect of Mother’s Korean Ability on Multicultural Adolescents’ Academic Achievement and the Mediating Effects of their Self-esteem

본 연구는 어머니의 한국어 능력이 다문화 청소년의 자아존중감을 매개로 하여 학업성취에 미치는 영향관계를 확인하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 한국청소년정책연구원이 수집한 ‘다문화 청소년 패널조사(Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study)’ 6차년도 자료를 활용하였고 외국인 어머니와 한국인 아버지를 둔 다문화 청소년 1,283명을 대상으로 선정하였다. SPSS 24.0 프로그램을 활용하여 빈도분석 및 기술통계분석, 상관관계분석, 다중회귀분석을 실시하였고 SPSS Macro를 활용한 Bootstrapping 방법을 통해 매개효과의 유의성을 검증하였다. 분석 결과, 어머니의 한국어 능력이 높을수록 다문화 청소년의 학업성취와 자아존중감이 향상되는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 다문화 청소년의 자아존중감이 높아질수록 학업성취가 높아지는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로, 어머니의 한국어 능력과 다문화 청소년의 학업성취 간 관계에서 자아존중감이 완전매개효과를 가지는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 다문화 청소년이 경험하는 학업 성취 문제를 완화하고 예방하는 실천적, 정책적 대안을 논의하고자 한다.

The purpose of this study is to examine effects of mother’s Korean ability on multicultural adolescents’ academic achievement and the mediating effects of their self-esteem. In order to accomplish this purpose, data of 1283 multicultural students born to a foreign mother and a Korean father were examined. Frequency Analysis, Descriptive Analysis, Correlation Analysis and Multiple Regression Analysis were conducted using SPSS 24.0. Also, Bootstrapping method was used by SPSS Process Macro to verify the mediating effects of the self-esteem. The main results of this study are as follows. First, mother’s Korean ability is found to have a positive effect on multicultural adolescents’ academic achievement and self-esteem. Second, multicultural adolescents’ self-esteem has also been found to have a positive effect on their academic achievement. Lastly, the association between mother’s Korean ability and multicultural adolescents’ academic achievement was fully mediated by their self-esteem. Based on the result, this study suggested practical and political solutions to alleviate and prevent multicultural adolescents’ academic achievement problems.
