탈북청소년 대안학교에서의 교육적 성장에 대한 질적 사례연구

A Qualitative Case Study of North Korean Migrant Youth’s Educational Growth

본 연구의 목적은 탈북청소년 대안학교에서 학생들이 경험하는 교육적 성장의 양상과 요인을 탐색하는 것이다. 먼저, 탈북청소년들의 입학 초기 전반적인 모습과 변화의 양상을 나누어 기술하고, 이를 바탕으로 탈북청소년들의 교육적 성장을 가능하게 한 요인을 도출하였다. 경기도 소재 학력인가 탈북 대안학교를 연구현장으로 삼아 질적 사례연구를 수행하였는데, 심층면담, 참여관찰, 문서분석을 수행하였다. 주요 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 교육적 성장은 학습, 태도, 관계, 정서라는 네 영역에서 이루어지고 있으며 학생들은 학교 생활을 통하여 각 영역에서 성장을 이뤄내고 있었다. 둘째, 해당 학교의 다문화교육적 접근은 탈북청소년의 교육적 성장을 실현하는 주요 요인이다. 이들은 학생들의 특성에 기반을 둔 맞춤형 교육과정과 평가, 학생들의 문화와 경험에 대한 배움과 학생 이해가 반영된 교수-학습법, 현장에서 체득한 실천적 지식에 기초한 교사들의 효능감, 구성원의 특성을 존중하는 우호적인 학교 환경 등이다. 셋째, 학교의 공동체성은 탈북청소년의 교육적 성장을 위한 또 다른 요인이며, 구체적으로는 학교의 가족 기능 수행과 교사 간 핵심가치의 공유를 들 수 있다. 본 연구는 탈북청소년의 특성을 고려하여 적합하게 실행된 학교교육이 그들의 변화와 성장을 이뤄낼 수 있다는 가능성을 제시한다. 또한 탈북청소년의 성장을 위한 요인들을 탐색함으로써 학교교육에 시사점을 제공한다.

The purpose of this study is to explore North Korean migrant students’ growth experience at an alternative school. The present study first described North Korean migrant youth’s general behavior in their early days at school and then their change and growth in their school lives. The findings of the present study are as follows. First, North Korean migrant youth have experienced their educational growth in the areas of learning, attitude, social relationship, and emotion. Second, the multicultural education approach of the school is a main factor that promotes North Korean migrant youth’s educational growth. Third, a sense of community among teachers and staff of the school contributes to the North Korean migrant youth’s educational growth. The findings of the present study imply that a well designed school system based on a multicultural approach can promote North Korean migrant youth’s positive change and growth.
