다문화배경 청년의 자기정체성에 관한 질적 탐색

A Qualitative Study on Self-Identity of Young Adults with an Immigrant Background

이 연구는 다문화사회라는 시대적 전환기에 그동안 본격적으로 연구되지 않았던 다문화배경 청년의 생애를 이해하고 자기정체성의 특성과 양태를 분석하였다. 본 연구의 다문화배경 청년은 다문화가족의 구성원 출신으로 성장하거나 중도에 입국하게 된 청년을 대상으로 한다. 즉, 이제 성인기로 진입한 다문화가정 구성원 출신의 2세대, 혹은 1.5세대를 분석하는 새로운 탐색 연구로서 이들 청년의 자기인식과 정체성을 질적 연구 방법론을 통해서 탐색하였다. 연구 결과, 청년들은 국내출생이든, 중도입국 출생이든, 국적과 민족적 배경과 상관없이 하나의 정체성으로 수렴할 수 없는 다양한 뿌리의식을 유동적으로 형성하고 있었다. 국내출생 청년의 경우는 ‘나는 누구인가’라는 질문을 유년기부터 청년이 된 지금까지도 가지고 있으며, 중도입국 출신 청년의 경우도 자신의 사회적 소속감과 위치를 국적과 언어 구사력 등, 외재적 준거를 통해서 끊임없이 도전받는 특징이 드러났다. 이 연구는 그동안 탐색되지 않았던 다문화배경 청년의 자기정체성을 질적으로 접근하여 청년의 내밀한 목소리를 담았다는 학술적 의의를 가지며, 향후 다문화배경이 사회통합을 이루는 다양성 자본으로 이어질 수 있도록 교육계의 학술적 논의와 정책적 지원을 고도화할 필요가 있다는 점을 보여준다.

As Korea transitions to a multicultural society, this study aims to understand features and issues of self identity of young adults with an immigrant background (“Young Immigrants”) within their life-world, which has been overlooked. Since multicultural policies in Korea have focused on marriage immigrants and “students” and “youth” with an immigrant background, it is significant to explore Young Immigrants’ life and voice. Adapting a qualitative methodology, this study showed that Korean-born Young Immigrants have plural identities while most of them would raise self-questioning ‘who I am?’ in Korean society. On the other hand, Foreign-born Young Immigrants confront challenges in terms of obtaining citizenship would self-question who they are in Korean society. On the other hand, foreign-born Young Immigrants confront challenges when obtaining citizenship and korean language capacity to maintain their life. This study provides novel findings and implications to reshape current multicultural education and to enhance value of diversity across the society.
