Investigating the Potential of Optical Head-Mounted Displays as the Next Generation Device for Augmentative and Alternative Communication

차세대 보완대체의사소통(AAC) 디바이스로서의 Optical Head Mounted Display의 활용 가능성 탐색

본 연구는 웨어러블 디바이스의 한 종류인 Optical Head Mounted Display(OHMD)의 보완대체의사소통 기기로서의 활용 가능성을 탐색하기 위한 목적으로 실시되었다. 최근 보완대체의사소통 기기를 필요로 하는 사용자가 증가함에 따라, 다양한 장애 유형과 의사소통 기능을 고려한 맞춤형 AAC 시스템 개발의 필요성이 점차 커지고 있다. 본 연구는 신체의 움직임이 자유롭지 못한 AAC 사용자를 대상으로, 시선추적(eye-tracking) 기술 기반 안구 마우스를 탑재한 OHMD를 개발하고 이의 사용성 평가를 실시하였다. 더불어 본 연구는 최근 오픈 소스 소프트웨어 및 하드웨어 기술의 진보에 주목하면서, 저비용으로 단시간에 개발이 가능한 AAC 시스템 구현에 초점을 두었다. 연구의 첫 번째 단계에서는 삼성에서 개발된 EyeCan 오픈 소스 플랫폼과 소형 웹 카메라를 활용하여 OHMD의 초기 프로토타입을 개발하고, OHMD의 AAC기기로의 활용 가능성을 전문가 세 명의 의견을 통해 수집하였다. 두 번째 단계에서는 앞서 개발된 OHMD 프로토타입의 시선추적 기능의 정확성을 향상시킨 후, 정상 시력을 가진 일반 사용자 10 명을 대상으로 시선추적의 정확성, 착용감 및 사용성에 대한 평가를 실시하였다. 전반적으로 본 연구는 주변에서 쉽게 구할 수 있는 재료 및 오픈 소스 플랫폼을 활용하여, 비교적 단시간에 저비용으로 AAC 기능을 지원하는 OHMD 기기를 개발할 수 있다는 가능성을 제시한다는 점에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

In this study, we propose a wearable device such as an optical head-mounted display (OHMD) system as a promising technological solution as the next generation device for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), which is affordable and easily customizable. This paper presents the development, implementation and evaluation of our proposed OHMD system in a two-phased study. In Phase I, we focused on developing a prototype of the law-cost OHMD system using an opensource eye-tracking software platform called EyeCan. Then, we interviewed three experts to gather opinions about the potential of the OHMD system in AAC. In Phase II, we improved technical functionalities of the OHMD system developed in Phase I, and conducted a usability study with ten participants to verify the accuracy and usefulness of our proposed OHMD system. Overall, this study demonstrates the feasibility of rapid development of a low-cost eye-tracking system for AAC users. In conclusion, our proposed OHMD system can be potentially applied in AAC, and we call for more research into integrating recent advances in emerging technologies to develop affordable, user-friendly, and personalized AAC systems.
