Cross-Cultural, Cross-Linguistic Study on Perception of Blissymbols by Korean and English Speakers

블리스심볼 인식도에 대한 문화언어간 비교연구 : 한국어와 영어사용자 중심으로

배경 및 목적: 본 연구는 언어, 문화가 다르거나 다른 문화에 장기 노출되었을 때 심볼인식에 있어 어떠한 차이를 나타내는지를 알아보는 연구로, 다른 언어, 문화 간의 심볼의 도상성 인식 정도를 비교하고자 하였다. 방법: 연구는 미국에 재학 중인 미국 대학생 31 명, 한국에 재학 중인 한국 대학생 37 명, 미국에 재학 중인 한국 대학생들 30 명을 대상으로 하였고, 90 개의 무작위로 추출된 블리스심볼의 도상성을 7 점 척도로 제시하여 이해정도를 체크하도록 하였다. 문제 안내는 각 나라의 언어로 제시되었고, 각 대상자 그룹별로, 90 개의 블리스심볼별로 차이를 X² 검정을 통하여 비교분석 하였다. 결과: 그룹별로 선택한 최고 도상성이 높은 심볼들과 낮은 심볼들은 달랐으나 그룹 간에 유의미한 차이는 없었다. 그러나 블리스심볼별로 세 그룹 간에 도상성 인식정도를 살펴보았을 때, 9 개의 심볼 인식에서 차이를 보였다. 결론: 연구결과에 근거하여 문화, 언어가 다른 집단에 따라 심볼 인식 경향과 AAC 중재에 있어 심볼 선택의 유의점에 대하여 논의하였다.

Background and Objectives: This study explores whether there are differences in perceiving 90 randomly-selected Blissymbols across cultures. Method: 37 Korean students in Korea, 31 Korean students in the United States (U.S.), and 30 European-American students participated in this study. The data were collected from the participants’ classrooms. Materials were made in Korean and English versions and instruction of rating procedures were offered using each group's native language. Results: There was a difference for the nine individual symbols on translucency ratings for 90 Blissymbols. However, there was no difference in the overall comparisons. Conclusion: The influence of acculturation on symbol perception with people in their culture and people with acculturation experience are discussed, and implications for further research and clinical practices are suggested.
