The Study on the Effectiveness of Food Art Therapy Program to Reduce Helplessness and Improve Life Satisfaction in Facility Residents with Mild Cognitive Impairment

The purpose of this study is to perform a food art therapy program for the elderly with mild cognitive impairment living in a facility and to verify the effect on helplessness and life satisfaction. The subjects of this study were 18 elderly people aged 65 years or older with mild cognitive impairment who lived in a nursing home located in D city, and whose MMSE-K score was between 20 and 23 points. Among them, 9 elderly were randomly assigned to the experimental group and the remaining 9 to the control group. For the food art therapy program, a total of 24 sessions of 60 minutes were conducted once a week from June 01, 2018 to November 30, 2018, targeting the experimental group. The helplessness scale and life satisfaction scale were used as the research tools used for the subjects. For data analysis, repeated measures ANOVA was performed for differences according to the time period and group. The results of this study are as follows. First, the food art therapy program showed a significant effect on the overall helplessness of the elderly with mild cognitive impairment living in a facility, and the effect was found to be sustained. Second, the food art therapy program showed a significant effect on the life satisfaction of the elderly with mild cognitive impairment living in a facility, and the effect was found to be sustained. From the above results, it can be seen that the food art therapy program is effective in reducing helplessness and improving life satisfaction in the elderly with mild cognitive impairment living in facilities.
