양육 미혼모의 삶의 경험과 학업 지속 선택에 관한 내러티브 탐구

A Narrative Inquiry on Life Experience and Choice of Continuation of Education of Child-Rearing Unmarried Mothers

본 연구는 최근 한국 사회의 미혼모 현황의 변화 추세에서 뚜렷한 특징으로 나타나고 있는 양육 미혼모의 증가에 관심을 가지고, 양육 미혼모의 지난 삶의 경험과 미래를 위해 선택한 학업 지속의 의미를 밝히기 위해서 선정한 두 양육 미혼모의 내러티브를 탐구하고자 하였다. 본 연구의 연구참여자들은 예기치 않은 임신을 통해 삶의 격변을 겪어온 미혼모로서, 임신과 출산 과정에서 남자친구와 헤어짐, 원가족과의 불화와 단절, 출산한 아이의 입양과 양육을 둘러싼 선택의 갈등, 비호의적인 사회적 시선 속의 제도적 지원, 그리고 불확실한 미래에 대한 불안 가운데서도 지나간 삶과 미래를 향한 학업 지속이라는 선택을 통해서 희망을 이어가고자 하는 의지를 자신의 내러티브를 통해 설명해 주었다. 연구참여자들의 내러티브 속에 나타난 자신과 딸들의 연령, 조언, 생계, 정부 지원, 시설 거주기간의 연장 조건 등에 대한 설명을 분석해 보면, 그들의 내러티브가 가지는 의미는 오늘의 현실보다 내일의 희망을 선택한 것으로 해석할 수 있었다.본 연구는 이러한 양육미혼모의 내러티브 분석과 해석을 바탕으로 미혼모들의 학업 지속의 장애 요인들을 제거하고 학업을 지원할 수 있는 제도적 지원 방안을 포함한 몇가지 시사점들을 제시하였다.

This paper explores the narratives of child-rearing unmarried mothers to reveal the meaning of their life experiences and choices to continue their educations in college. The research participants are two child-rearing unmarried mothers who have experienced the upheaval in their lives through an unexpected pregnancy. Even in the midst of trials such as breaking up with their boyfriends during pregnancy and childbirth, discord or severance with their original families, conflicts of choice over adoption and nurturing of child, unfavorable social gaze, government’s support, and uncertainty about the future, research participants explained their wills to continue their hopes through the choice of continuing their educational career toward the future. Analyzing the descriptions of their ages and their daughters’ ages, advices, livelihoods, governmental support, and conditions for extending the facility residency period expressed in their narratives, we could interpret the meaning of their narratives as choosing tomorrow's hope rather than today's reality. And we suggest institutional measures for supporting their choice of continuation of education.
