플라톤의 국가론에 비추어 본 공교육의 목적

The Purpose of Schooling in the Light of Plato’s Theory of Republic

[연구 목적] 최근 우리사회에는 참사에 가까운 안전사고, 대통령 탄핵 등 국가적 위기로 인식될 수 있는 여러 사건이 연이어 일어났다. 본고는 플라톤의 국가론에 비추어 우리가 겪고있는 위기의 실체를 좀 더 명확히 드러내고 국가를 국가답게 만들기 위해 가장 중점을 두어야 할 공교육의 목적을 논한다. [연구 내용] 올바른 국가의 본을 세우는 작업을 통해 플라톤이 찾아낸 국가적 차원의 올바름은 ‘제 일을 하는 것’이다. 국가는 수호자와 생산자 집단으로 구성되는데, 국민이 각자의 소질과 성향에 맞게 수호자 또는 생산자가 되어 제 일을 하는 것이 국가를 올바르게 세우는데 핵심이 되는 것이다. 특히 수호자가 사익을 추구하지 않고 국가공동체 전체를 위해서 헌신하게하는 것이 올바른 국가 수립에 있어 가장 중요한 과제인데, 이를 위해 ‘시민적 용기’를 갖춘수호자를 양성하는 교육이 필요하다. 현재 우리 사회에서는 공직자와 전문가 등 공공성이 강한 일에 종사하는 이들을 수호자라고 볼 수 있는데, 최근 우리가 경험한 국가적 위기에 대해서는 ‘시민적 용기’를 갖추지 못한 수호자의 책임이 크다. 이에 더하여 국가의 근간이 되는생산자공동체 또한 흔들리고 있다는 점에서 더욱 심각한 위기상황에 처해 있다. [결론] 이 위기를 극복하기 위해서는 공교육에서 시민교육을 최우선의 목적으로 삼아야 한다.

[Objective] Recently, Korea has experienced many national crisis, such as disastrous incidents and the impeachment of the president. This paper reveals more clearly the substance of Korean national crisis in the light of Plato’s theory of republic and discusses which public education purpose to be taken as a priority for the national justice. [Contents] The meaning of justice that Plato defines in designing a theoretical model of a good state is ‘doing one’s own job’. A state can be regarded as composed of a guardian group and a producer one. What is critical for the establishment of a just state is public education to educate guardians or producers in accordance with their own talent and disposition. Especially, it is important for the guardians’ commitment to the whole community rather than seeking for their own interest, and for the guardian education it is crucial for them to acquire ‘civic courage’. If we look in the Korean crisis, we finds that the public officials and experts who can be regarded as guardians do not have ‘civic courage’. In addition, there is a more serious crisis in that the producer community or the occupational state which is the foundation of the state is collapsing. [Conclusions] In order to overcome this crisis, citizen education should be taken as a primary purpose of public education.
