Nursing Science and Phenomenology

Introduction: This paper aims to study the corelation of the idea of phenomenology and nursing as caring experience in life world, and then explores a meaning of phenomenology as qualitative research method not only in nursing science but also in caring practice for the clients. Body: First, phenomenological qualitative research in nursing science reveals the lived experiences in the life world of clients, which are hidden by medical science and objectivism based on the positivism. This means that phenomenological nursing research reflects really the idea of phenomenology, namely 'Sache selbst` as the lived experiences of illness, suffering, caring for be deeply rooted in the life world. Second, existential phenomenological research describes the meaning of the lived experience of illness and gives a way of caring practice as practical wisdom from the aspect of the existential involvement in the embodied life world. Conclusion: This perspective of embodiment enables nurses to understand bodily experiences of patients and recovery of their bodily capacity in responding to the situation in caring practice. Therefore, existential phenomenological nursing research can provide descriptions and meaning of the lived experience of illness and a way of coping with the crisis of human existence in caring practice.
