Narrative Case Research on the Joys and Sorrows of an Unmarried Normal Woman Supporting Disabled Brothers: With Meditation Counselling

Purpose: The purpose of this narrative research is to explore the joys and sorrows of an unmarried normal woman supporting intellectually handicapped brothers, and to help her have an insight into the meaning and value of her own life through a counselling based on meditation. This research investigated what joys and sorrows the unmarried normal woman who was the main care provider of the disabled brothers had experienced and how she had experienced those, and the causes of joys and sorrows, and what had changed and what were the factors of changes through meditation counselling. Methods: This research has conducted the meditation counselling based on narrative research method of Clandinin & Connelly (2000) understanding human experiences, and on the basis of this, encoded and analyzed the quotations, counselling worksheets and other materials, and reflected the opinion of study participant. Results: The study participant has experienced awareness and insights through facing opening her own problems, and could find new energy and value of life while receiving the counselling based on meditation. Discussion: The researcher derived three discussions from the results of this research. First, narrative case research is relevant to positive effect to this research. Second, meditation and RIM as intervention is relevant to effectiveness of counselling. Third, DBT combined with meditation counselling is relevant to the effect of counselling polysynthetically. Conclusion: Through this research, exploring the joys and sorrows of an unmarried woman supporting intellectually handicapped brothers, suggesting the establishment of national mental health policy supporting and protecting their lives, and conducting the counselling with meditation and RIM intervention would be the positive results of this research.
