엘리너 오스트롬은 성공적으로 운영되는 공유지에 대한 연구를 통해 공유자원이 파괴되는 공유지의 비극 문제를 해결해온 주체가 공동체임을 밝히고 있다.이 책에 담긴 연구에는 공동체는 자율적인 규제를 통해 공유재를 보존하는 사례를 다루고 있다. 소유가 아닌 대여와 차용으로 여럿이서 제품을 공유하는 공유 경제가 본격화하고 지식 공유의 가치가 창의적이며 협업적인 새로운 패러다임 전환을 가져오는 최근의 사회경제적 상황이 보편화되고 있다. 공유자원과공동체 사이에 집합적 행동을 위한 제도가 어떻게 진화되었는지에 대한 연구의 중요성이 이 지점에 있다.

Through her research on successful commons, Eleanor Ostrom identifies communities as the key to solving the tragedy of the commons: the destruction of shared resources. The studies in this book show how communities preserve commons through self-regulation. The recent socio-economic situation in which the sharing economy is in full swing and the value of knowledge sharing has been transformed into a creative and collaborative paradigm by borrowing and lending rather than owning, is becoming commonplace.
