일반학교를 경험한 학생들의 중･고 통합 공립 대안학교 선택 이유와 학교생활 경험 분석

A Study on the Reasons for Students who Attended Ordinary School to Choose an Public Alternative School as Integrated Middle and High School and an Analysis on the Experience of Their School Lives

본 연구는 일반학교 학생들이 공립 대안학교인 ‘나침반학교(가칭)’를 선택하여 진학한 이유에 대한 궁금증에서 출발하였다. 학생들의 일반학교 학교생활을 살펴보고 1년 동안의 공립 대안학교 경험을 통해 학생들이 느낀 일반학교와 공립 대안학교의 차이점은 무엇인지 분석해 보고자 한다. 이를 통해 일반학교 학생들이 공립 대안학교를 선택하여 진학하는 이유를 심층적으로 분석하고 공교육에 시사점을 제시하는 데 목적을 두었다. 연구 결과 일반학교 학생들이 공립 대안학교를 선택한 이유로는 ‘적극적일 수 있는 기회’의 유지, 자녀에게 새로운 길을 권하는 학부모들의 존재, ‘공립’이라는 지위, 내 삶의 주인공이 되고 싶은 이유였다. 일반학교와 대안학교의 차이는 다른 종류의 어려움, 모두 친한 선생님, 제일 힘든 친구 관계, ‘나’를 세우니 주변이 보인다, 포장된 흙길 vs 비포장도로 꽃길로 나타났다. 연구 결과를 통한 공교육의 시사점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 주도적 형태의 학업에 열중하고자 하는 학생들을 위한 새로운 유형의 공립 대안학교가 확대될 필요가 있다. 둘째, 본 연구가 일반학교에 주는 시사점이 있으나 이는 공립 대안학교와 일반학교의 딜레마적인 요소가 존재한다. 셋째, 신생 공립 대안학교인 나침반학교의 연구 결과를 통해 OECD에서 중요하게 다루는 학생 행위주체성과 변혁적 역량 달성에 도움이 되는 학교 문화와 교육과정 전략을 찾아볼 수 있다.

This study began with questions about why students in regular public schools chose to go to a public alternative school, Compass School (pseudonym). The authors tried to discover the pattern of students’ school life and analyze the differences between that of regular schools and that of public alternative schools through a year of experienc ein the new schools. It also aimed to draw implications from the results of analysis for public education. As a result of the study, the reasons why regular public school students chose public alternative schools were (a) maintaining an opportunity to be active, (b) the status of “public” in their new school, and (c) their aspirations to be the owner of their lives. The difference between the regular public school and the alternative school were a different kind of difficulty: the paved dirt road versus the unpaved flower highway. The implications of public education through the results of the study are as follows. First, there is a need to expand a new type of public alternative school for a sizable number of students who can better learn at this type of school . Second, this study led us rethink the concept and meaning of what it is for students to be successful in school. Third, through the results of this research on Compass School, a new public alternative school, we found that school culture and curriculum strategies can help achieve student agency and transformative competencies, which are also emphasized by the OECD.
