Background The tilt of the pelvis in the sitting position plays an important role in body alignment and muscle activity and function. Excessive anterior or posterior tilting of the pelvis can result in misalign-ment of the spine, which is more likely to cause back pain due to excessive pressure on the spine and muscle imbalance. Objectives The purpose of this study was to compare the muscle activity of the rectus abdominis (RA), transverse abdominis (TrA), and erector spinae (ES) over time of subjects with different pelvic tilts in a sitting position. Methods The study included 36 healthy young adults. Subjects were divided into three groups: pelvic anterior tilt group (12), pelvic neutral group (12), and pelvic posterior tilt group (12). A palpation meter was used to measure the pelvic tilt. Surface electromyography (EMG) was used to measure the EMG ac-tivity of the RA, TrA, and ES at 0, 10, and 20 minutes in a sitting position. Repeated one-way ANOVA was used to compare the average values. Results In the pelvic anterior tilt group, the EMG activity of ES significantly decreased over time in the sitting position (p < 0.05). In the pelvic posterior tilt group, the EMG activity of ES significantly increased over time in the sitting position (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the EMG activity of the trunk muscle in the pelvic neutral group. Conclusions This study showed differences in ES activity in the sitting position depending on the tilt of the pelvis. These results mean that the activity of the erector spinae muscles in the sitting position varies depending on the tilt of the pelvis, and this can be used as an indicator to be considered according to the tilt of the pelvis when teaching the sitting position.
