The Korean conjunction ending ‘-doni’ and the Chinese particle ‘láizhe’ are typical grammatical expressions in Korean and Chinese expressing retrospective nature. The predecessors have conducted in-depth and detailed discussions on the two mainly from the aspects of tense and aspect. This article is mainly based on the expectation category theory and the relative univocity theory to re-examine and interpret these two expressions, and the following conclusions can be drawn initially: First, the Korean conjunction ending ‘-doni’ and Chinese particle ‘láizhe’ basically have obvious expectation attributes, and can be based on information changes of the communicative subject in different contexts are further classified; second, although these two expressions have strong expectation characteristics, they still show different tendencies internally. The counter-expectation tendency of Korean ‘-doni’ is more prominent, the positive expectation and relief counter-expectation tendencies of the Chinese particle ‘láizhe’ are more prominent; third, the different characteristics of the two expressions at the expectation category can be mainly explained by the aspects of grammaticalization and pragmatic reasoning mechanism.
