영유아기 자녀를 둔 중국 유학생 아버지가 경험하는 자녀양육의 어려움과 보람

Difficulties and rewards of parenting experienced by international male Chinese students raising young children

본 연구는 영유아기 자녀를 둔 중국 유학생 아버지가 경험하는 자녀양육의 어려움과 보람을 이해하려는 목적으로 수행되었다. 본 연구를 위하여 영유아기 자녀를 둔 중국 유학생 아버지 4명을 연구참여자로 선정하고, 2022년 8월부터 10월까지 반구조화된 면담 질문지를 사용하여 심층면담을 통한 질적 사례연구방법을 사용하였다. 연구결과, 영유아기 자녀를 둔 중국 유학생 아버지가 마주한 양육의 어려움은 ‘법적 제약에서 오는 양육의 어려움’, ‘유학생 아버지로서 느끼는 양육의 한계’, ‘귀국 후 자녀의 학교생활 적응에 대한 우려’로 나타났으며, 아버지가 느끼는 양육의 보람은 ‘유학생활의 원동력’, ‘자녀에게 좋은 교육환경을 제공’, ‘든든한 후원자인 가족들의 지지’, ‘대학 내에서 양육을 돕는 지지망’으로 나타났다. 이를 통하여 학문적으로 주목받지 못했던 중국 유학생 아버지가 한국에서 영유아기 자녀를 양육하면서 겪게 되는 어려움과 보람을 알아봄으로써 유학생 아버지가 바람직한 자녀양육을 수행하기 위한 정책을 마련하는데 기여할 것이다.

The purpose of this study aimed to understand the difficulties and rewards of parenting experienced by international male Chinese students who were fathers of young children. The participants were four male students in Korea who fulfilled the aforementioned criteria. For this purpose, the study used a qualitative case study approach with in-depth interviews, based on a semi-structured questionnaire survey conducted from August to October 2022. The results showed that difficulties in parenting faced by Chinese international student fathers with children in early childhood included ‘challenges due to legal constraints’, ‘limitations in parenting as international student fathers studying abroad’, and ‘concerns about their children’s adjustment to school life after returning to China’. Meanwhile, the rewards included ‘motivation for studying abroad’, ‘a good educational environment for children’, ‘support from reliable family members’, and ‘a support network within the university to help with parenting’. This study’s significance lies in its exploration of difficulties and rewards experienced by Chinese international students in raising their young children in Korea, which has not gathered much academic attention. The results contributes to establishing policies for international male students raising young children to carry out their desirable child-rearing.
