유아가 참여한 실외놀이터 재구성 과정에서의 경험 탐색

Exploring the experience of reconstructing outdoor playgrounds with young children's involvement

본 연구는 유아가 자신의 유아교육기관 실외놀이터를 재구성하는 과정에 참여하는 경험을 탐색하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 D시에 위치한 A어린이집, 만 5세, 18명의 유아들이 실외놀이터 재구조화 과정에 참여하였다. 실외놀이터 소개하기, 사진 찍기, 사진 면담, 그림 그리기, 구조물 만들기, 모형지도 만들기와 같은 다양한 참여적, 시각적인 방법과 면담, 참여관찰이 사용되었다. 연구 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 유아는 자신의 관점에서 실외놀이터 공간에 대한 자료를 수집하고 해석하며 연구 아젠다를 만들어 내는 공동연구자로서의 역할을 수행하였다. 둘째, 유아는 수집한 자료를 통해 실외놀이터에서의 경험을 재방문하며 사적인 내러티브를 통한 성찰의 기회를 가졌으며 실외놀이터 사용상의 문제 공론화를 통한 해결책을 구성해 내었다. 셋째, 유아가 제안한 ‘철봉 그물망’, ‘쉼 공간을 위한 벤치’, ‘역할놀이 집 앞 식탁’ 설치라는 아이디어가 실현되는 경험을 통해 자신이 실외놀이터 공간의 주인임을 경험하였다. 유아가 실외놀이터 재구조화 과정에 참여하는 장소 경험은 유아로 하여금 자신이 H반 공동체 일원임을 알게 하는 기회를 제공함과 동시에 실외놀이터라는 장소에 대한 애착을 갖도록 하였다. 이러한 ‘참여’의 경험은 이후 유아가 스스로 자신의 삶을 결정할 수 있는 사유의 범위를 넓히는데 도움이 될 것으로 여겨진다.

This study aimed to explore the experiences of young children participating in the process of reconstructing otheir outdoor play area in their early childhood education institution. To achieve this, 18 children from a 5-year-old class at A Kindergarten located in D City participated in the process of restructuring the outdoor play area. Various participatory and visual methods, such as introducing the outdoor playground, taking photos, conducting photo interviews, drawings pictures, creating structures, and making model maps, were employed. The results are as follows: First, the children collected and interpreted data about the outdoor play area from their own perspectives and played a role as co-researchers in creating research agendas. Secondly, the children had opportunities for reflection through their personal 'stories' from their experiences in the outdoor play area and addressed issues within the outdoor play area, constructing solutions on their own. Third, through the experience of realizing their ideas such as 'horizontal bar nets,' 'benches for relaxation spaces,' and 'front porch table for role-playing houses' in the outdoor play area, the children experienced themselves as the owners of the outdoor play area. Actively participating in the restructuring of the outdoor play area allowed the children to develop a sense of belonging and attachment to the outdoor play area as a 'meaningful' place filled with their stories. Such experiences of 'participation' are believed to help expand the scope of children's reasoning abilities in deciding their own lives in the future.
