The purpose of this study was to examine how facilitation and suppression techniques of balance taping affect the balance of muscle activity of vastus medialis (VM) and vastus lateralis (VL) during half squatting. Difference values before and after balance taping were measured for 30 young women through surface electromyography to find out how the application of VM-facilitation technique and VL-suppression technique through balance taping affect changes in muscle activity during half squatting. The study showed that difference values before and after balance taping during half squatting increased from 18.51 to 22.62 for VM and decreased from 29.64 to 26.46 for VL. It also showed that the comparison of the muscle activity ratio of VM to VL increased from 0.67 to 1.07. Since women are more likely to be exposed to orthopedic injuries of the lower limbs than men, it is very important for them to strengthen their lower extremity muscles by during half squatting. However, women have a severe imbalance in the muscle activity ratio of VM and VL due to an increase in Q-angle, and doing exercise in this imbalanced state may cause secondary problems. Therefore, doing squats while maintaining the balance of muscle activity through balance taping has great clinical value.
