Development Strategy for High-effident Food Waste-to-Energy in Seoul

Food waste in Korea has been a constant problem because of the high contents of chlorine and moisture. Until now, most of the food waste has been recycled as a dried-feed for flocks including chicken. However, recently, it has been difficult to secure the demand due to the increased interest in animal welfare and negative perception of the use of dried-feed from food waste. To solve this problem, the Korean government is setting the direction to convert organic waste to energy through integrated biogasification. Three major organic waste (food waste, sewage sludge, and manure) can be disposed through an integrated biogasification plant. Therefore, it is essential for Seoul to convert from existing dried-feed manufacturing facilities to integrated biogasification plants, and accordingly, a development strategy is needed. In this study, we present a strategy for the conversion to integrated biogasification plants in Seoul through surveys, literature, and collection of expert opinions. As a result, the development strategy included short-, mid-, and long-term targets. Through the strategy, we propose the transition from a step-by-step dried-feed manufacturing to an integrated biogasification plant.
