A Study of the Meaning of the Sahmyook and Sahmyook Education Based on E. G. White’s Understanding of Man

본 연구는 한국 재림교회 교육의 근간이 되는 삼육의 의미를 재림교회 교육의 창시자인 엘렌 G. 화잇의 인간 이해에 기초하여 살펴보고, 이에 기반한 삼육교육의 의미와 방향성을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 삼육(三育)이란, ‘세 가지(三)를 기른다(育)’라는 의미를 가진 한자어로 그 세 가지가 지덕체, 또는 영지체 등 다양하게 사용되고 있어 합의된 용어의 정의가 필요하다. 엘렌 화잇의 인간 이해의 핵심은 하나님의 형상이며, 그는 하나님의 형상을 신체적(physical), 정신적(mental), 영적(spiritual) 영역의 세 가지로 정의하였으며, 이는 데살로니가전서 5장 23절의 영⋅혼⋅몸과 동일한 개념이다. 삼육(三育)을 정의할 때 재림교회 교육의 목적은 죄로 인해 타락한 인간의 본성을 하나님의 형상으로 회복하는 변화이므로, 구속사업과 동일한 영적인 목적을 가지기 때문에 덕(德)보다는 영(靈)으로 용어를 통일하는 것이 적합하다. 인간의 정신적 측면에는 지성적 측면 뿐만 아니라 정서적, 의지적 측면이 포함되며, 이 세 가지 정신적인 영역을 발달시킬 수 있는 것은 지식이 아니라 지혜이기 때문에 지(知)보다는 지(智)로 정의하는 것이 적합하다. 인간의 변화는 전인적으로 이루어지나 가장 먼저 변화되어야 하는 것이 ‘영’이며, 변화된 ‘영’이 ‘혼’과 협력하여 작용하며 ‘혼’과 ‘몸’의 변화를 이끌어낼 수 있기 때문에 삼육교육(三育敎育)을 지덕체(知德體)보다는 영지체(靈智體) 교육으로 정의하는 것이 적합하다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of Sahmyook, the Seventh-day Adventist education in Korea based on the human understanding of Ellen G. White, the founder of Seventh-day Adventist education, and to suggest the meaning and direction of Sahmyook education based on this understanding. Sahmyook (三育) is a Chinese term meaning ‘nurturing three aspects.’ There have been various opinions about what the three aspects are, so an agreed upon definition is needed. The core of Ellen G. White's understanding of human beings is the image of God, and she defined the image of God in three areas: physical, mental, and spiritual, which is the same concept as spirit, soul, and body in 1 Thessalonians 5:23. In defining Sahmyook, the purpose of Adventist education is the transformation of sin-corrupted human nature into the image of God. Thus it is appropriate to use the term spirit rather than virtue because it has the same spiritual purpose as the work of redemption. The mental aspect of man includes the emotion and will as well as the intellect. Human transformation is a holistic process, but the first thing to be transformed is the spirit, and a transformed spirit can work in cooperation with the soul to bring about changes in the soul and body. Therefore, it is more appropriate to align the order of the spiritual, mental, and physical with the meaning of the order of human change.
