이 연구는 에스더 8~9장에 기록된 유대인들의 대학살을 정당화하기 위해 본문이 어떤 문학적 장치를 작동하고 있는지를 분석한 연구이다. 분석 결과 그 본문에는 그 목적을 위한 세 가지의 문학적 장치가 있음이 확인되었다. 첫째는 ‘재산은 탈취하지 않았다’는 기록의 반복이다. 둘째는 ‘처자’에 대한 언급 생략이다. 셋째는 ‘자기 생명을 위한 것’이라는 명시적인 해설이다. 본문은 이런 장치를 통해 이 살육이 정당하였다고 독자들을 설득한다.

This study aims to analyze the literary device used in Esther chapters 8-9, which the author intends to justify the massacre of the Jews. In a nutshell, there are three literary devices for that purpose in the text. The first is the repetition of the record that ‘but they laid not their hands on the prey.’ The second is the omission of mention of ‘little ones and women’ in their slaughter. The third is an explicit explanation of ‘protect themselves.’ The text persuades the readers through these literary devices that this slaughter was justified.
