Heat Recovery from MSW Incineration: An Assessment of the Current Situation and Future Research Directions

  • 8

This presentation provides an overview of our progress over the past five years and future challenges in the area of heat recovery from municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration, a practical way to promote sustainable waste management practices. The Korean government has reduced incineration tax based on recovered efficiency, incentivizing improved energy recovery. We will first present the current recovery efficiency status in Korea, which is estimated using the formula (known as "R1") taking into account the total energy input and output. The results showed that the recovery efficiency of MSW incineration could reach up to 90%, with the efficiency being dependent on factors such as the types of waste and the configuration of the incineration facilities to some extent. Recovered energy is commonly used for both heat and electricity, with heat—only utilization accounting for approximately 60% and combined heat and power (electricity) plants for the remaining 40%. The second topic discusses research tasks required for further system development. We provide an update on an ongoing research project by the National Institute of Environmental Research that aims to enhance efficiency estimation procedures suitable for the Korean situation. This presentation aims to share valuable insights and provide the audience with a better understanding of the ongoing efforts to improve the effectiveness of the framework.
