남성육아휴직 경험자의 출산의향에 관한 분석

The Willingness to Have More Children after Paternity Leave

본 연구에서는 남성육아휴직을 직접 경험한 이들을 대상으로 그들의 출산의향에 대해 분석한다. 과거에 비해 남성육아휴직자가 점점 증가하고 있는 상황에서 남성육아휴직을 경험한 이들의 출산의향도 함께 높아져 출산율 제고에도 도움이 되고 있는지에 대해 분석하는 것이다. 이를 위해 동일한 조건 하에 있는 남성육아휴직자 20명을 대상으로 인터뷰를 실시하였다. 분석결과, 남성육아휴직 여건에 상관없이 남성육아휴직을 경험한 이들 대부분은 출산의향에 거의영향을 주지 않았다고 하였다. 남성육아휴직 제도 자체가 지니는 한계가 없다는 가정하에서도출산의향에는 변화가 없었다. 각자 자신들의 자녀계획에 변경을 가할 정도의 영향을 주지 않았다. 반면 남성육아휴직이 본인들의 출산의향을 높이지는 않아도 사회적 차원에서는 출산율제고에 기여할 것이라고 하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 남성육아휴직 제도가 사회 전반적으로 일반화되어 자녀계획 이전이나 그 과정에 영향을 줄 수 있도록 해야 한다는 점과, 개인의 출산의향과 사회적 차원의 출산율 제고 간 간격 차이를 해소하기 위해 사회문제의 내면화와 실천노력이 필요함을 말해준다. 아울러, 본 연구는 남성육아휴직 제도를 출산율 제고 방안으로 삼는 것에 대해 다시 생각해볼 논의거리를 제공해 주고 있다.

This study examines whether taking paternity leave increases fathers’ willingness to have more children. Given that the number of men taking childcare leave is increasing, this study aims to examine whether taking paternity leave is helping to improve the fertility rate by increasing the willingness to have more children. Twenty people on paternity leave under the same conditions were interviewed and their responses analyzed. Results indicated that regardless of the conditions for taking parental leave, for most of the participants, paternity leave did not affect their willingness to have more children. Even if there were no problems with the paternity leave system, there was no change in the willingness to have more children. For those who took parental leave, it did not affect their intention to have more children than they had originally planned. However, they thought that the paternity leave system would contribute to increasing the fertility rate even without changing their willingness to have more children. The results suggest that the paternity leave system should be made easily accessible to everyone so that paternity leave can have an early impact on plans to have children. It is necessary to reduce the gap between individuals’ willingness to have children and the fertility rate in society. Furthermore, this study suggests rethinking the use of the paternity leave system as a way to increase the fertility rate.
