Association between Allergic Diseases and Suicide-related Behaviors among Korean Adolescents

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the association of allergic diseases with suicidal ideation, suicidal plan, and suicidal attempt among Korean adolescents. Methods: This study analyzed data from the 18th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Factors influencing suicide-related behaviors were determined using complex sample multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: A total of 51,850 adolescents with a mean age of 15.20 years completed the survey. Among the participants, 5.7%, 36.3%, and 22.2% had lifetime asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis, respectively. Meanwhile, 19.7%, 47.6%, and 26.2% of the participants had current asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis, respectively. Regarding suicide-related behaviors, 14.3%, 4.5%, and 2.6% of the participants reported suicidal ideation, suicidal plan, and suicidal attempt, respectively. The multiple logistic regression model showed that allergic diseases are influencing factors for suicidal ideation, suicidal plan, and suicidal attempt. Lifetime and current asthma and lifetime and current allergic rhinitis were found to be statistically significant risk factors for all three suicide-related behaviors. Lifetime atopic dermatitis was found to be a statistically significant risk factor for suicidal ideation, while current atopic dermatitis was found to be a statistically significant risk factor for suicidal attempt. Conclusion: Adolescents with allergic diseases exhibit a significantly higher prevalence of suicidal ideation, suicidal plan, and suicidal attempt.
