Burningham의 그림책 『지각대장 존』에 나타난 Bakhtin의 카니발 분석

Analysis of Bakhtin’s Carnival in Burningham’s Picture Book,『John Patrick Norman McHennessy: The Boy Who Was Always Late』

본 연구의 목적은 John Burningham의 그림책 『지각대장 존』에서 Mikhail M. Bakhtin의 카니발 개념을 분석하는 것이다. 카니발 웃음, 그로테스크 리얼리즘, 전도의 세 가지 측면에서 기호학적인 의미작용을 분석한 결과, 첫째, 존이 학교 가는 길에 맞닥뜨린 커다란 파도는 학교로부터 해방되는 기쁨의 사건으로 재해석됨에 따라 카니발 웃음을 찾을 수 있었다. 둘째, 권위와 근엄을 상징하는 학위복과 이에 걸맞지 않게 화내는 선생님의 경박한 모습 간의 대조에서 그로테스크 리얼리즘이 분석되었다. 셋째, 지각대장으로 불리던 존은 어려움을 지혜로 해결하면서 카니발적인 영웅으로 복원되는 반면, 권위주의적인 선생님이 천장에 매달려 권위와 권력이 전도됨을 발견할 수 있었다. 카니발적인 표현과 해학은 영유아의 목소리를 회복하기 위한 방안으로 수용되어야 하며 이러한 노력의 일환으로 교육현장에서 다양한 카니발 요소와 가능성을 지속적으로 검토할 필요가 있을 것으로 사료된다.

The purpose of this study was to analyze how John Burningham"s picture book ��John Patrick Norman McHennessy: The Boy Who Was Always Late is interpreted in terms of Mikhail M. Bakhtin"s concept of carnival. As a result of analyzing semiotic signification from three aspects of carnival laughter, grotesque realism, and subversion, carnival laughter was found in the large wave that John encountered on his way to school indicates an event of joy of being liberated from school. Grotesque realism was analyzed and it was found that the teacher"s frivolous anger did not match authority and solemnity. Subversion was found in that John is described as a cheerful carnival hero who solves difficulties with wisdom, while the authoritarian teacher"s status and identity are overturned by hanging him from the ceiling. Carnival expressions and humor should be accepted in educational settings as a way to restore the voices of young children, and as part of this effort, it is necessary to review more diverse carnival elements and possibilities in various educational fields.
