초현실주의 데페이즈망 기법에 의한 그림책 읽기 - Frédéric Clément의『새벽의 새 사냥꾼』을 중심으로

Interpretation of a Picture Book by the Surrealist Technique of Depaysement - Focusing on L'oiseleur de l'aube by Frédéric Clément

본 연구는 프랑스 그림책 작가 Frédéric Clément의 『새벽의 새 사냥꾼』에서 초현실주의의 대표적 표현 기법이자 Magritte의 작품세계가 기반한 표현 기법인 데페이즈망이 일러스트레이션 차원에서 어떻게 구현되고 있는지 살펴보는 것을 목표로 한다. Suzi Gablik과 Sarane Alexandrian의 데페이즈망 분류에 기반하여, 데페이즈망을 이질적 오브제들의 ‘결합’과 본질의 ‘변화’로 구분하여 이 작품을 분석하였다. 첫째, 이 작품에서 머리가 둘 달린 혼종인 독수리는 결합의 데페이즈망으로 볼 수 있고, 또 다른 혼종인 “갈대의 뿌리를 가진 분홍새”는 변화의 데페이즈망으로 볼 수 있다. 둘째, 신비스러운 혼종인 “새 사냥꾼”은 이 작품에서 이질적인 두 개체를 결합시키면서 데페이즈망을 만들어내는 주체로 보았다. 셋째, 가시적인 것 속에 감추어진 것을 바라보도록 촉구하는 듯한 Magritte의 데페이즈망 기법에 기반하여, Frédéric Clément의 『새벽의 새 사냥꾼』은 신비한 변신을 만들어내는 주체와 기이한 혼종으로 변신하는 대상과의 만남의 서사로 읽어낼 수 있다. 따라서 이 작품은 데페이즈망을 통해 놀라움, 더 나아가 당혹감을 만들어냄으로써 초현실주의가 추구하는 미(美)인 경이감 또는 Magritte가 지향하는 신비로움을 경험할 수 있도록 해주는 아이코노텍스트라고 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 일반적인 사고를 넘어서서 문학 교육이나 미술 교육에 있어 학습자의 창의적 사고나 상상력을 자극할 수 있는 교육적 도구를 만들어내는 데 기여할 수 있다.

This study examined how the depaysement, a representative technique of Surrealism, especially that of Magritte"s artworks, is implemented in the illustrations of the French picture book artist Frédéric Clément"s L’oiseleur de l’aube. Based on the categorization of Suzi Gablik and that of Sarane Alexandrian, the research categorized the depaysement as the association of disparate objects and the transformation of their essence to analyze the work. First, in this picture book, the eagle, a two-headed hybrid, can be seen as a depaysement of association, while the other hybrid, the "pink bird with reed roots," can be seen as a depaysement of transformation. Then, the "bird hunter,” a mysterious hybrid, can be analyzed as the creator of the depaysement in this work, bringing together two disparate entities. Finally, based on Magritte"s depaysement technique, which seems to urge the spectator to perceive what is hidden in the visible, Frédéric Clément"s L’oiseleur de l’aube can be interpreted as a narrative of an encounter between a subject who creates a mysterious transformation and an object that gets transformed into a hybrid. To conclude, it can be considered an iconotext that creates surprise and even bewilderment with the depaysement, enabling the viewer to experience the beauty of Surrealism"s sense of wonder and Magrittean mystery. This research can help to stimulate learners" creative imagination and thinking in literary and art education beyond the ordinary.
