본고의 목표는 부정의를 행하는 것이 부정의를 당하는 것보다 더 나쁘다는 『고르기아스』편 속 소크라테스의 주장을 정당화하는 것이다. 특별히 본 작품의 대화편이라는 특수성을 고려하여 위 주장이 도출되는 논변이 소크라테스의 대화 상대자들에게는 부족함 없는 설득력을 갖는다는 점을 논증한다. 이를 위해 먼저 본고는 본 논변이 폴로스를 설득한다는 일차적 목표를 지닌다는 점을 고려할 때 그간 이 논변의 약점으로 지적되어 온 대부분의 문제들이 해소된다고 주장한다. 소크라테스와 칼리클레스의 논의 과정에서도 이 논변의 정당성이 중요한 위치를 차지한다는 이해 하에 다음으로 본고는 왜 칼리클레스 역시 이 주장을 받아들일 수밖에 없는지 검토한다.
This paper aims to justifying that Socrates’ claim in the Gorgias that doing injustice is worse than suffering injustice. To be more specific, I argue that the argument from which this claim derives has a sufficient persuasiveness for Socrates’ interlocutors. To achieve this aim, firstly, this paper argues that most of the problems that many scholars have pointed out as defects of this argument are resolved, considering that this argument has the primary goal of persuading Polus. Since the legitimacy of this claim occupies an important position in the discussion process between Socrates and Callicles, this goes further and examines why Callicles also has no choice but to accept this claim.
