A Study on the Symbolism of Dogs

본 연구의 목적은 다양한 문화권에서의 개의 상징성을 고찰하고, 모래놀이 치료 사례에서 개의 상징적 의 미를 탐색하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 개의 생물학적 특성과 신화, 전설, 민담, 민속 문학, 미술품 및 속담 등 의 문헌에서 개의 보편적인 상징성을 고찰하고, 연구자의 모래놀이 치료 사례에 나타난 개의 상징적 의미 를 분석심리학적 관점에서 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 개의 상징성은 첫째 수호신, 둘째 충성심, 셋째 안내자 및 지킴이, 넷째 치유력 및 희생, 다섯째 재생, 여섯째 문제해결력, 일곱째 동반자, 여덟째 예시력, 마지막으로 비천함 등 9가지 측면으로 나타났다. 모래놀이상담 사례에 표현된 개의 상징성을 살펴보면, 8세 여아 사례 에서는 주인과 친근감을 가지고 일상의 삶에서 함께 어울리고 있는 동반자로, 15세 청소년 사례에서는 규 칙과 질서 안에서 발달과제를 해결해 가는 문제해결력과 조련사의 조련으로 충동성과 비행을 조절하는 치 유력으로 나타났다. 또한 35세 여성 사례에서는 주인에 대한 충성심으로 주인을 위한, 주인만을 지키는 충 성심 및 수호신으로, 37세 남성 사례에서는 주인에게 가족 구성원과 같은 친밀성을 지니며, 위험한 것으로 부터 주인을 지키는 동반자 및 수호신으로 표현되었다. 본 연구는 다양한 측면에서 개의 상징성을 고찰하 고, 실제 모래놀이 치료 사례들에 표현된 개의 상징적 의미를 탐색함으로써, 상징적 매개체로의 개에 대한 이해와 통찰을 돕는 기초 연구라는 점에 의미가 있다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the symbolism of dogs in various cultures and explore the symbolic meanings of dogs in the sandplay therapy cases observed by the researcher. To that end, the study first looked into the biological characteristics of dogs, as well as the symbolism of dogs as seen in myths, legends, folktales, folk literature, artwork and proverbs. The study then examined the symbolic meanings of dogs that appeared in sand tray scenes created by clients from the perspective of analytical psychology. As a result, nine symbolic meanings of dogs have been found as follows: 1) a guardian, 2) loyalty, 3) a guide or guard, 4) healing powers and sacrifice, 5) regeneration, 6) problem-solving abilities, 7) a companion, 8) foresight, and 9) lowliness. The symbolism of dogs used in the clients’ sandplay scenes in this study is as follows. First, for an eight-year-old girl, a dog represented a companion as it was friendly to its owner and stayed with the owner in her daily life. Second, for a fifteen-year-old adolescent, a dog signified problem-solving abilities and healing powers as the client performed development tasks and controlled impulsiveness and misdeed.; This was represented by a dog trained by a handler. In sand tray scenes created by a 35-year-old woman, a dog protecting and devoting itself to its owner denoted loyalty and a guardian. In sand tray scenes created by a 37-year-old man, a dog was close to its owner like a family member and appeared as a companion and a guardian protecting its owner from danger. This study is meaningful as it provides the fundamental understanding of and insight into dogs as a symbolic medium by examining the symbolism of dogs and exploring the various symbolic meanings of dogs represented in sandplay therapy cases.
