This study examined how satisfaction with interpersonal relationships moderates the impact of stress and loneliness on happiness in old age, with a focus on gender differences. The analysis included 5,593 adults aged 60 years and above (2,632 males and 2,961 females) from the first Korean Happiness Survey (2021) conducted by the National Assembly Futures Institution. The findings indicate that satisfaction with interpersonal relationships significantly moderates the relationship between stress and happiness as well as between loneliness and happiness among both male and female older adults. This study highlights stress and loneliness as the primary factors that diminish happiness, suggesting that satisfaction with interpersonal relationships can mitigate these negative impacts. Consequently, this study underscores the importance of recognizing and preventing the detrimental effects of stress and loneliness in old age by promoting positive interpersonal relationships as protective factors.
