말레이시아 국립박물관 도슨트(Docent) 프로그램 사례 연구

Case Study: Docent Program of Muzium Negara(The National Museum of Malaysia)

국가 차원에서 다문화를 지향하고 표방하는 말레이시아의 국립박물관이 운영하고 있는 도슨트 프로그램은 소장유물에 대한 지식의 전달자 역할과 더불어 문화적 다양성 구현 측면에 기여하고 있다. 필자는 2022년 말레이시아 국립박물관 도슨트 교육프로그램에 외국인으로 참여하여 전 과정을 이수하였고, 실제 도슨트로서 현장에서 방문객을 대상으로 전시해설을 수행한 바 있다. 본고는 말레이시아 국립박물관 도슨트 커뮤니티의 일원으로 활동하면서 경험한 사례를 기반으로 말레이시아 국립박물관 도슨트 프로그램을 고찰하였다. 말레이시아 국립박물관 도슨트 프로그램의 외국인 참여자들은 자신의 출신 국가와 종교, 교육 등의 배경을 기반으로 말레이시아 역사와 박물관 전시 유물 등에 대한 학습, 멘토를 통한 교육, 전시해설 연습을 통해 도슨트로서 필요한 전문 역량을 습득한다. 여기서는 이러한 도슨트 교육생 선정 및 교육프로그램 구성과 운영, 교육 수료 후 도슨트의 주요 활동 등을 구체적으로 살펴보았다. 그리고 그 과정에서 말레이시아 국립박물관 도슨트 프로그램의 특징적 요인들을 파악하였다. 첫째 외국인 참여 도슨트 프로그램의 문화적 다양성 증진에 대한 기여, 둘째 도슨트 커뮤니티와 박물관의 원활한 상호협력 관계, 셋째 도슨트의 체계성과 지속성 유지를 위한 도슨트 교육프로그램이 그것이다. 필자는 이러한 분석을 토대로 도슨트 프로그램에 대한 발전 방향을 제언해 보고자 하였다. 본고는 기존 연구에서 다루어지지 않았던 국외 사례에 대한 소개와 분석을 시도한 연구로 기존 사례 연구의 범주를 확대하여 도슨트 프로그램의 방향성을 모색하였다는 점에서 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

The National Museum of Malaysia, which promoted multiculturalism at the national level, operated a docent program. This program served as a conduit for knowledge about the museum's collections and contributed to the realization of cultural diversity. The author participated as a foreigner in the 2022 National Museum of Malaysia docent education program, completing the entire process and conducting exhibition explanations as a docent on-site. This paper covered the National Museum of Malaysia docent program based on the author's experiences as a member of the docent community. Foreign participants in the National Museum of Malaysia docent program acquired the necessary professional competencies through learning about Malaysian history and museum exhibits based on their country of origin, religion, education, and other backgrounds. This learning included mentorship and exhibition explanation practice. This paper specifically explored the selection of docent program participants, program structure and operation, and the main activities of docents after completing their education. During this process, distinctive features of the National Museum of Malaysia docent program were identified. The first is the contribution of the foreign participation docent program to the promotion of cultural diversity, the second is the mutually beneficial relationship between the docent community and the museum, and the third is in-service training to maintain the systematicity and continuity of the docent training program. Based on this analysis, several insights into docents were derived in this paper. This paper holds significance as it attempts to introduce and analyze a foreign case that has not been covered in previous research and expands the scope of existing case studies.
