The Impact of College Students’ Smartphone Addiction on Their Adaptation to College Life and Suicidal Thoughts

The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that college students’ smartphone addiction influences their adjustment to college life and suicidal thoughts. The subjects of this study were male and female university students in G metropolitan city, and the data of 258 students were used for statistical analysis. Suicidal ideation scores increased with subjects who responded as average or dissatisfied with their smartphones, and as their smartphone addiction scores increased and their adaptability to college life decreased. In order to prevent college students’ smartphone addiction, practical and policy intervention is needed to address suicide-related issues among college students from the beginning of college admission, and smartphone addiction prevention education and college life adaptation programs appropriate for the age of college students should be developed.
