유인석 위정척사의 이론근거와 의병운동의 전개양상 - 『소의신편』의 내용을 중심으로 -

The theoretical basis of Yoo In-seok's Wijungcheoksa and the development pattern of righteous army movement - Focusing on the contents 『soeuisinpyen』 -

본 논문은 유인석(1842~1915) 위정척사의 이론근거와 의병운동의 전개양상을 밝힌 것이다. 유인석은 화이론적 세계관․역사관에 근거하여 위정척사론을 전개하고, 또한 이러한 위정척사론에 근거하여 실제로 의병운동을 전개한다. 유인석은 중화의 문명을 지키고 보존하는 것을 모든 행위의 궁극적 목표로 삼는다. 일본․서양의 침략으로 나라가 신음․분개하는 역사적 격변기에 문명수준의 우월을 가치판단의 기준으로 삼는 문명중심의 화이론을 제창한다. 이것은 그대로 20세기에 이르러 일제의 침략이라는 시대적 상황에서 항일의병운동의 이념으로 발전한다. 그의 의병운동과 국외망명으로 연속되는 대일항쟁의 일체 행위 역시 그 연장선상에 있다. 결국 나라를 수호하려는 강렬한 의지가 중화의 수호의지로 표출되니, 유인석의 위정척사론은 중화의 보존의식의 표출이며, 이것은 동시에 항일의지로 직결된다. 이러한 화이론적 세계관은 당시를 살았던 조선유학자들의 대외 또는 역사인식의 기본 틀을 이루고 있다는 점에서 주목할 만하다.

This paper reveals the theoretical basis of Yoo In-seok(1842-1915) Wijeongcheoksa(衛正斥邪) and the development pattern of righteous army movement. Yoo In-seok develops the theory of Wijeongcheoksa based on the theoretical view of world view and history, and also actually develops the righteous army movement based on this theory of Wijeongcheoksa. Yoo In-seok makes protecting and preserving Chinese civilization the ultimate goal of all actions. It proposes a civilization-centered chinese and barbarians theory that uses superiority at the level of civilization as a criterion for value judgment during the historical upheaval when the country groans and rages due to Japanese and Western aggressions. As it is, in the 20th century, it developed into the ideology of the anti-Japanese military movement in the context of the Japanese invasion. His righteous army movement and all the acts of the uprising against Japan, which are continuous due to overseas asylum, are also an extension of that. In the end, the strong will to protect the country is expressed as China's will to protect it, Yoo In-seok's theory of Wijeongcheoksa is an expression of China's conservation consciousness, and at the same time, it is directly linked to the will of anti-Japanese. This chinese and barbarians theoretic world view is noteworthy in that it forms the basic framework of the external or historical perception of Joseon confucian scholars who lived at the time.
