중증장애인의 ‘의존-자립-상호의존’ 경험에 관한 연구

A Study on 'Dependence-Independence-Interdependence' Experiences of People with Severe Disabilities

본 연구는 자율성을 거부 당하는 타율적인 삶을 살아가게 되는 지체 및 뇌병변장애인을 중심으로 그들이 장애를 가진 삶 속에서 어떠한 상호의존 경험을 하였고, 그러한 경험들 중 어떠한 요소가 자기결정성과 자율성을 가지고 살아가게 하는지, 그리고 그렇게 마침내 실현해낸 자립이 그들에게 어떠한 의미로 이해되는지를 도출하고자 중증 지체장애인과 뇌병변장애인으로 구성된 4명의 연구참여자를 대상으로 Rosenthal의 내러티브-생애사적 연구를 진행하였다. 연구결과, ‘자기결정을 기반으로 상호의존성을 발휘하며 살아내기’로 표현되었고, 세부 주제로는 ‘의존의 시기: 부모를 통해 얻게 된 장애와 자립의 이미지’, ‘의존에서 자립으로: 관계를 통해 얻게된 자립의 동기’, ‘자립의 시기: 사회적 장벽을 마주하는 치열한 일상’, ‘상호의존으로: 의존과 자립의 공존을 스스로 선택하는 삶’ 4가지로 구분되었다. 이들의 생애사적 내러티브를 통해 도출해낸 자립의 의미는 ‘자기결정을 기반으로 상호의존성을 발휘하는 상태’로 제시하였다.

This study conducted a narrative-biographical research methodology with four participants, consisting of individuals with severe physical disabilities and brain disorders, to explore their experiences of interdependence within their lives with disabilities, and to identify elements within such experiences that contribute to their self-determination and independence. The aim was to understand how independence, ultimately achieved through these experiences, is perceived by them. The research findings were expressed as ‘Surviving through Interdependence Based on Self-Determination’, with four subthemes identified: ‘Dependence Phase: Disability Acquired through Parents and the Image of Independence’, ‘Transition from Dependence to Independence: Motivation for Independence Acquired through Relationships’, ‘Independence Phase: Struggling Daily Life Confronting Social Barriers’, and ‘Through Interdependence: Choosing Coexistence of Dependence and Independence’. Through their biographical narratives, the meaning of independence derived was presented as a state of “exhibiting interdependence based on self-determination.”
