A Critical Review on Research of Multicultural Education Policy: A Decolonial Perspective

This study was conducted with the aim of comprehensively and critically analyzing the characteristics of domestic research based on multicultural education policy announced by the Ministry of Education annually since 2006. To achieve this, content analysis was carried out on 25 domestic research arricles related to the multicultural education policy. The focus of the analysis was to comprehensively review the main issues identified in these studies regarding policy shortcomings, proposed directions for policy improvements, and the theoretical perspectives underlying these studies. The research findings revealed that while the studies presented various discussions regarding the shortcomings of policy and directions for policy improvements, they were generally biased towards a liberal-pluralist multicultural approach, emphasizing efforts to improve awareness of cultural differences among members of society. Based on these research findings, the study proposed the necessity for activating research that approaches the issues of multiculturalism based on various epistemologies and the need to generate discussions and theories based on Korea's multicultural reality from a decolonial perspective.
