『경상남도지』의 ｢방언｣에 담긴 경남방언 연구

On the Dialectal Study in ‘Bangeon’ of Kyungsangnamdoji

이 글은 1963년 경상남도지편찬위원회에 의해 발간된 󰡔경상남도지󰡕中에 실린 ｢방언｣(1963:966-1029)을 면밀히 살피고, 위 업적이 경남방언 연구사라는 전체 맥락에서 갖는 방언학사적 의의를 드러내는 데 그 목적이 있다. ｢방언｣은 일찍이 방언을 하나의 독립된 언어 분화체로 적극적으로 인식하고, 경남방언 전반에 대해 공시적인 기술을 꾀하였다. 이러한 시도는 종래의 역사언어학에 기반한 원자론적 연구 태도를 극복한, 획기적인 업적이라 할 수 있다. 한편, ｢방언｣은 경남방언의 음소 목록과 의문법, 경어법 등 문법형태소의 분포 등의 방언 특징을 통해 해당 방언을 하위 구획하는 데까지 나아간다. 현재까지도 이 방언의 구획과 분화를 논함에 있어 ｢방언｣의 연구 결과가 회자된다는 점에서 ｢방언｣이 경남방언 연구사에서 차지하는 위상은 분명하다 할 수 있을 것이다.

This article aims to closely examine the ‘Bangeon’ (1963:966-1029) included in the Kyungsangnamdoji published by the Kyungsangnam-do Compilation Committee in 1963 and to reveal the significance of this work in the context of the overall history of South Kyungsang dialect research. The ‘Bangeon’ proactively recognized dialects as "independent language variations" and attempted a synchronic description of the overall South Kyungsang dialect. This endeavor can be considered a groundbreaking achievement, as it overcame the atomistic research approach based on traditional historical linguistics. Meanwhile, the ‘Bangeon’ goes as far as to subdivide the South Kyungsang dialect by examining dialectal features such as the phoneme inventory and the distribution of grammatical morphemes in the South Kyungsang dialect. The fact that the research results of the ‘Bangeon’ are still validly referenced in discussions on this dialect to this day clearly demonstrates the noteworthiness of this work in the history of South Kyungsang dialect research.
