디지털 탄소 발자국을 둘러싼 기후 행동과 비행동에 대한 탐색적 연구 - 기후인식이 높은 디지털 네이티브를 대상으로 -

An Exploratory Study on Climate Action and Non-Action Concerning Digital Carbon Footprints: Focusing on Digital Natives with Higher Climate Awareness

디지털 탄소 발자국은 디지털 기술의 발달과 이용 증가에 따라 미래 기후위기에 영향을 미칠 새로운 문제로 주목받고 있다. 이 연구에서는 기존 기후 행동 개념에 디지털 탄소 발자국 줄이기를 추가하고 개인 일상에서의 행동실천 변화에 대한 시사점을 도출하고자 하였다. 연구 대상은 디지털 기술 이용에 상대적으로 능숙한 디지털 네이티브인 대학생들인데, 그 가운데서도 특히 기후변화 교육을 받아 기후 인식이 상대적으로 높아진 대학생들이다. 디지털 탄소 발자국에 대해 학습하고 넷제로 빙고를 통해 실천을 시도했지만, 디지털 탄소 발자국을 줄여나가는 데 왜 어려움을 겪는지에 관심을 두고 초점집단면접과 심층면접의 혼합연구로 분석하였다. 그 결과, 기후 인식이 높아도 디지털 탄소 발자국에 대한 인식이 높지 않았으며 이를 제고하기 위해서는 환경 활동 및 수업과 같은 특정 계기가 필요함을 알 수 있었다. 높아진 인식이 지속적인 실천 행동으로 이어지지 않는 데는 7가지 방해 요인, 6가지 뿌리 요인(비행동), 4가지 외부 요인이 작용함을 발견하였다. 향후 이러한 요인의 개선이 이루어질 때, 디지털 탄소 발자국을 줄일 수 있을 것이다.

Digital carbon footprint is emerging as a critical issue affecting future climate crises due to the development and increasing use of digital technologies. This exploratory study aims to integrate the concept of reducing digital carbon footprints into the broader framework of climate action and draw implications for changing behavioral practices in individuals’ daily lives. The study focused on university students who have advanced proficiency in digital technologies and possess a relatively high level of climate awareness, often gained through climate change education. Through focus group interviews and in-depth discussions, the study examined why students struggle to reduce their digital carbon footprints despite learning about the issue and participating in activities like NetzeroBingo. The findings revealed a lack of high awareness regarding the digital carbon footprint, even among those with strong climate awareness. This suggests that specific triggers, such as environmental activities and educational classes, are necessary to enhance awareness. Moreover, high awareness alone did not translate into sustained action, as seven barriers, six root causes of inaction, and four external factors were identified as influencing this behavior. Addressing these factors in the future could facilitate a reduction in digital carbon footprints.
